I got a rejection letter recently from a NY publisher I queried a year and a half ago. The editor informed me that he was sorry that it too so long to review my manuscript. Apparently it had gone up for a second reading. “Two members on our staff have added second readings to their other responsibilities, and I am acting as their secretary.”
This letter told me several things. First, I don’t suck. Whew! Second, things in NY are every bit as bad as rumor has it if the editors are now acting as secretaries, trying to do less with more.
I’m very thankful they rejected me, since I’ve had the book in question epubbed for a year and have happily been earning money on it. In fact, I’ve gone from being a starving artist to one who just had a $20,000 payday. For one month. Self-pubbing.
I’m not submitting to NY anymore. If they come to me I’ll certainly consider their offer, but right now I’m making money doing what I love. I don’t have to spend the emotional energy waiting a year and a half for a rejection. I don’t have to hear that the like my writing style, but they’re not sure how they would market my book.
These days I’m doing very well with my Dark Lands series especially. The Charmer hit #1 on Barnes and Noble and was ranked in the top ten on Amazon UK and US. It’s been a long road, but I can honestly say I’m grateful for the rejections, for they were definitely blessings in disguise.
