Christmas Cards

Every year Ron and I say we are going to write a Christmas form letter to stick inside our Christmas cards. We’ve never done it. But we do write our news in the card. We don’t just sign our names.

To me, the best reason to send Christmas cards is to keep in contact with friends you rarely see or call, but whom you want to keep within your circle. So a mere signature is just not enough. I like to let them know what we have been up to, the changes in our lives, what Kira and Shana have been doing–like breaking a wrist snowboarding. Thanks, Shana, for something so interesting to write about this year. :( And I expect to learn about their lives, too. That’s why I feel such a disappointment when I open a card from someone I have not seen or heard from in a while, and all that is in the card is a name. Well, I tell myself, at least they are thinking of me.

For some reason, my mother hated getting form Christmas letters. I love them! They are so full of news and sometimes pictures. I understand that everyone on their Christmas card list probably gets the same letter. But it’s usually long and detailed, and I wouldn’t expect anyone to handwrite that much to me! I’m so glad to really catch up with their lives.

So send me a card with some news in it if you are going to send me a card!

Do you like Christmas form letters? Do you send them? Or do you just sign your name?

  1. I like Christmas form letters, but rarely get them. I send one out, though. If I wrote the letter on every one of the cards (and I send out over 30), the cards would never get sent! I do make sure to sign the letter and card, though.

The cards I hate getting are the ones where their name is printed inside, with no letter or news. They couldn’t even find the time to sign it? Why bother, then?

  2. Christmas cards are probably my least favorite holiday to-do item, so I make them as simple as possible. I used to do the form letters, but even that grew to be a task I dreaded. Finally, I switched to photo cards from Shutterfly. I’ve designed my own before, but printing them always wound up being such a pain! And yes, I’m one of those people who uses the preprinted names, so I don’t even sign them. At least I still send them!

We don’t send out nearly as many as we used to. But I enjoy making the cards. And I enjoy the fact that I’m connecting with people, often for the only time that year!

  4. I always do a Christmas letter. I like getting them too. I find it’s not only a great way to keep friends and family informed but an encapsulation of the year’s most important events in our family’s lives- a little diary, if you will. Sometimes I even create our Christmas cards using Christmas pictures we’ve drawn on windows. I like that added personal touch.

What a nice idea! My window painting was not worthy of being included in any Christmas card! And I notice that much of it has come off the window! I really need to get down there and just take it down.
