My Art

Mural

This aspen tree is one of my “littles.”  Painted on blue paper with acrylics, it is just 2 1/2″ x 2″.

On the right is a mural I did for the City of Aurora, Indiana. They wanted “Trades of the1800′s.”  Because I am a hand spinner myself, I chose to paint a spinster.

This is my first oil painting in many years. It was fun experimenting! This painting is 8 inches by 10 inches.

This is one of my little pictures, just 2 1/2 inches by 2 inches.  It is done with pen and colored pencil and will go on a gift tag.

Three necklaces I made with seed beads.  The long black one has approximately 17,000 beads in it–each one strung by hand.

I made this 6 foot circular shawl from wool I spun myself on tiny drop spindles.  Yes, I have a spinning wheel, but sometimes I like to use an older method to spin.  Besides, with the small drop spindles, I can spin in the car while Ron drives!  It took me almost a year to spin the wool and knit the shawl.  The thread is very fine.

Below you can see two drop spindles.  The bigger one is a Turkish spindle and is about the size of most drop spindles.  The smaller one I am holding is the one I used to spin the wool for this shawl.

This is my “Crazy Scarf.”  I had a lot of yarn scraps and decided to use them. I wove this on one of my little ridged heddle looms rather than one of my floor looms.  I had no idea how it would turn out, but I figured, it’s just scrap yarn, anyway.  But I like it!

Oh my! 17,000 beads in that lovely black necklace! You are a very talented lady. I absolutely adore the little 2.5 x 2 inch gift tag. What a very personal way to give a gift … even the tag is a gift.

  3. Michele,
Out of curiosity I looked up your website. You are so very talented! Writing, painting and jewelry. Somewhere in there it sounds like you raised a sweet daughter, too. Certainly Ron knows he’s a lucky man!
    Cheers!

  4. Michelle, I didn’t realize you were such an artist! I’m impressed. I knew you spun–that shawl is gorgeous.

Did you know that I have a little Aspen painting you did hanging in my office? I want to say it is this same one. I love it!

  7. Beautiful, Michele! I think I’ve seen that mural – is it down by Newport on the Levee by chance? I’m trying to think where else I’ve seen murals in the Cincinnati area. The circular shawl is stunning! It must have taken you forever to make it! Beautiful!

The mural is in Aurora, Indiana. Aurora is a cute little river town and they now have over 60 murals around town. It is becoming a “destination” for people to see the art.

It took me almost a year to make that shawl.

Thanks for checking out my page.

    Michelle,

I knew you were an author but had no idea about your other artistic talents. They are all beautiful! I wanted to comment to let you know how much you remind me of Aunt Hennie in some of your pictures here and on Facebook.

This Holbrook does not have the talent you do, but wishes I did. LOL

    Michele,

Beautiful, smart, extremely creative and talented. I’m not the least bit surprised. But 17,000 beads!! I had no idea that patience was also one of your strengths.

    Michele -
I was reading up on past BP news letters and saw your piece on being a spinner. I’m so glad they posted it. Finding someone who spins is a rare thing these days, but in Oct I’ll be meeting a bunch of long distant friends in Asheville NC for Saffsite.org ;) One is a writer wanting to turn fiber artist. It is time to corrupt her.

Thank you again for sharing. I’ll have to add your works to my TBR list and keep an eye out for more fiber related news.
